No work done on the actual railway today :-(

More internet research into blocks and occupancy detectors, with a possible cheaper solution than Lenz from a company called Littfinski DatenTechnik (LDT) and its product RS8 – a little more research needed.

The rest of the time was spent tweaking the web site (you may have noticed the change in colours). I have identified a better way of displaying the photo’s to improve quality and have also changed the Guestbook page so that you don’t have to leave the site to post comments.

And finally I took some pictures of 37678(S) - Bachmann Class 37/5 Diesel 37678 Red Stripe/ Railfreight pulling a short rake of loaded electron car transporters.

Nothing much visually however much playing with Traincontroller software and wow I continue to be impressed with what it can do - have been playing today at linking signals and points together and switching multiple points at the same time as well as driving trains.

The next stage would appear to be setting up blocks or in plain english splitting the track into various independant sections with a sensor in each section to sense the train - this in theory should then show on the PC where the train is and allow full computerised control.

I think I am going to experiment on the 2nd Level of track as this is isolated from the main track and unballasted as of yet. This is an area completely new and I must say a little confusing. I have done much searching on the internet and believe that what I need are some Lenz LB101's (these will sense 2 blocks), 4 of which in turn connect into a Lenz LR101 - this doesn't look like a cheap option at approx £80 for 8 blocks (sections). Other solutions seem to be reed switches which would then link into ??

If anyone reading this has a better handle on this area I would love to hear from you.

One of my long term aims when I started this project was to computerise certain aspects of the layout when time and money permitted. A step in that direction was taken today……having recently managed to find a Lenz LI-USB Computer Interface at a cost on EBay that I couldn’t say no too!

The interface was connected up using the supplied USB cable to my Laptop and an xpressnet cable (which had come with one of the LA152 fitted around the layout was used to connect to it). Software was installed and a little playing ensued with the supplied Lenz Software – all good so far but nothing great (especially as a great part of the software is in German!)

From the Lenz web site there are numerous links to various demo software packages to automate railway workings in one way or other. Obviously I had to give them all a go and spent a few hours experimenting. The one that seems to fit my needs and which I had the best fun with was Traincontroller by Railroad & Co – I have only scratched the surface but to see a visualisation of the track on screen (only part of it so far) and to be able to click on points and see them changing and see whether they are open or closed at a glance and to drive trains from the PC was a good step forward and will undoubtedly give me many hours of fun!

I will continue to play with the demo version (though restricted) for now until I am sure it is the right package for me as it costs 289 EUR!

The second level boards are all down and secured with the majority painted where track will run.

The outside loop has been constructed by using PECO Setrack St235 No4 Radius Curves with the inside loop having No3 radius curves as a minimum. The entire track has been pined into place and wired, point motors have been added to points and connected into the relevant ls150\ ls110. A track plan of the 2nd Level has been added to the track plan page.

Trains have been run on the second level with the Virgin Voyager being able to go flat out!

Additional purchases this week include a couple of shunters:

08585 - Bachmann Class 08 diesel shunter 08683 in Freightliner livery
08921 - Bachmann Class 08 diesel shunter 08921 in EWS livery

Both have been fitted with Lenz 1000A’s and Kadee couplings.

Due to illness not much work completed :-(

A little more track pinned into place on the 2nd level, a couple more weathered EWS HTA’s purchased from EBay and a brief video walk around of the layout added to the video clips section.

7 May 07

New page added - VIDEO CLIPS and a few video clips uploaded - this area is very much in its infancy however I anticipate uploading plenty of video clips over the next few weeks.

Work continued on the second level with more track laid as the base boards slotted into place.

6 May 07

Well finally the walling (Faller 170860) to complete the section near the TMD arrived. It has taken nearly 6 weeks - moral of the story is to make sure you have enough supplies before you start a job!

Other arrivals included:

3 x Bachmann 31 Ton OBA open wagon with high end "EWS".

3 x Bachmann 104 Tonne GLW HTA Hopper Wagon 'EWS' Weathered.

The walling was applied allowing the last section of track in the TMD\ Station area to be ballasted.

Work continued on building the supporting frame for the second level - another job I don't particularly like with woodwork definately not a strong point - I seem to spend numerous hours trying to get things level and whether the two ends will ever meet level we will have to see.

Clearances are tight so supporting timber has had to be lain sideways on.

2 May 07

A little more weathering of ballast around the station area and approaches and signals wired in - managed to blow one through not thinking - YOU SHOULD HAVE A RESISTOR BETWEEN LED AND POWER - you would have thought I should be able to get it right by now - oh well have used the blown signal for effect where the presence of a signal is more important that the actual lights.

29 Apr 07

Weathering of ballast continued around the station area and approaches – a mix of black acrylic paint and water.

The ballst was added around the signals put in place yesterday. More foliage, an odd tree and some weeds were added and the station car park screwed into place.

A street light was added to the car park and wired in and then a Virgin Thunderbird stationed for photo's.

And finally a heavily loaded EWS 60026 passing throuh the station.......

28 Apr 07

A quiet day on the railway front with not a lot of time to spend on it. Last weeks ballasting has dried so this was tweaked, rails cleaned and any proud parts cleared.

I received a large batch of 2 and 4 aspect signals from Roger Murray this week so 6 of the 2 aspects were slotted into place (to be wired in at another time). A little detailing near the Signal box was also started, including adding the correct name plate (made on the PC).

24 Apr 07

Car Park painted, fencing applied to posts, barbed wire added, grass stuck into place, Cararama cars parked, Traffic cones placed and Skaledale skip dropped. Not quite finished but good enough for a few photo's.

23 Apr 07

Whilst waiting for the ballast to dry, and with a spare half an hour, work started on the station car park, (another cameo which will be able to be lifted out as required) with 6mm mdf cut, 3cm apart holes drilled and Ratio (436) security fencing glued in place.

22 Apr 07

After yesterday's efforts today has been a quiet one on the scenic front, the street lights for the terrace houses were wired in, tested and promptly disconnected to allow access for balasting, a couple of the loft joists were clad with faller walling to help them blend in a little and another section was ballasted (large white patches are holes (covered with tape) in preparation for some more signals which are on order).

And finally 57602(G+) Class 57/0 diesel 57602 in First Great Western livery entered service after having a Gold decoder + Power 1USP storage module fitted.

21 Apr 07

A whole day to spend and a whole lot of work planned……..

Work continued on the raised section with more supporting wood cut and base wood prepared. Then my day was dashed…….my wife had volunteered to make an allotment cameo to sit between the raised section and the terrace cameo made a few weeks ago.

She started on the cameo today however in a short space of time it became clear that I would have more involvement than hoped and as they say that was the end of the day………..

All the required extra pieces had been purchased over the last few weeks and were gathered together. The base of the cameo was cut from 6mm MDF and the 6’ fence supports (Ratio (436) security fencing) were stuck into place and the surrounding ground painted.

Cabbages, Cauliflowers, Lettuce’s and various other vegetables were constructed from two Busch kits (BU/1213 Cabbage & Lettuce & BU/1202 Cornfield) - these were ordered online at Model Masters and arrived within two days of ordering (I was very impressed considering how long some companies take). Constructing the kits was a very fiddly job however the final product made the effort worthwhile. For the ground some remnants from a Busch Ploughed field sheet was used.

Scatter was added for the paths, the fencing was stuck to the posts and cotton threaded to represent barbed wire. A couple of Skaledale sheds added and a gardener or two (Preiser), grass and trees placed appropriately and some clumps of weeds (Silfor Tufts) added and apart from placement on the layout and a few finishing touches all done!

An excellent cameo if I say so myself …………a special thanks to my wife who ably assisted in its construction especially some of the more fiddly bits.

20 Apr 07

A quick hour or two.........

The fiddle yard has never worked as well as I would have liked, access to some areas isn’t the easiest and with the second level taking shape time for a change of plan.

I have decided that three of the sidings are going to go and an access hole is to take their place.

The town is going to built over part of the remaining “off scene” tracks and I want to be able to lift this section off (or that’s the plan at this stage!) so that I can get easy access to the tracks below in case of maintenance or derailments etc etc.

So the supporting frame has started to be built, screwed and glued into place.

More work will carried out in this section tomorrow.

16 Apr 07

A couple of hours spent this evening tidying up a little, and moving the bridge section onwards.

The rest of the Peco Plate Girder Bridge Sides applied, track tacked into place and a little paint to touch up the pillar then a few minutes running trains and taking pictures - doesn't time fly!

And finally a view of everything coming together........slowly.

15 Apr 07

Not much done today as the loft was way too hot and other domestic commitments prevailed!

The bridge section was trimmed to the right size, painted and screwed into place.

Another supporting wall was cut and a little Faller walling applied to the ends (still needs a little paint work) - can't apply walling to the sides as clearance is not good enough.

Peco Plate Girder Bridge Sides have started to be added to the bridge section.

14 Apr 07

Another trip to AP Models this morning and I picked up a couple of EWS OBA wagons for the Corgi bricks….I know I said I wasn’t going to use them as a load but I couldn’t resist!

With an afternoon to myself and being as impatient as ever work started on the end of terrace cameo - one day I will finish something.........

After much pontificating on which way the scene was to look, a decision was made and work started.

Some 6mm MDF was used as the base, with cork used as the pavements, the cork was painted grey. Street lighting was added, as was a Skaledale post box.

The Terrace houses and walls were stuck into place (I have decided not to light these buildings as the street lamps should provide enough illumination in this area).

The cobbled road was made from a piece of Faller decrotive sheet.

Some bit’s and pieces were put into the gardens - paths, grass, dug garden, bushes and a couple of trees added.

Cararama cars were added and a few Skaledale wheelie bins for effect.

All in all I am very happy with the outcome.

The hedges to the front of the scene have only been placed temporarily whilst I took today’s photos - the frontage will be finished another day!

11 Apr 07

Additional supplies arrived today; 25 yds of code 100 Peco Track which will be used to form the new level and some new Skaledale items, which look great:

1 x Electricity sub-station
2 x Bay terrace house left hand
2 x Bay terrace house right hand
4 x Bay terrace garden walls

All the Skaledale items will be used in the coming months for an end of terrace cameo above the station signal box……

Another item that arrived was 10 Packs of Bricks for Corgi Modern Truck's – the scale is 1:50 however they don’t look out of place – these were purchased from EBay for just under £10. The idea came from an article on page 29 of the Spring issue of Model Rail in which Colin Brown, Maidstone suggested they looked great in Bachmann's 'OO' gauge Plasmor Blockfreight OBA Wagons (each wagon will hold 6 packs of bricks).

I will probably use them on a building site cameo though rather than a load.

Pictures of the real thing can be found at Paul Bartlett's web site.

The final signal from the track which leads from the TMD was wired in, further wiring in of signals is on hold awaiting replenishment of stock.

Track that was recently ballasted was cleaned and test runs conducted – all working fine.

Work commenced on the supporting wall opposite the TMD where the raised track section will run – wood was cut, screwed and glued. Faller walling was cut, trimmed, stuck and edges were painted.

Some grass, bushes and the odd tree were positioned.

In addition the first two pieces of the base for the raised section, which will form the " bridge" which will run left to right in the picture below were cut - work on this section is now on hold awaiting some more track.

8 Apr 07

No model railway work today - however trains did feature.......

Caught the 1025hrs from from Bishops Lydeard (Nr Taunton,Somerset) for an hour and a quarters trip to Minehead on board a steam train (BR(W) '5101' 2-6-2T No. 4160) run by the West Somerset Railway (WSR).

The journey was great and the scenery fantastic. For full details and some detailed pictures take a look at the unofficial West Somerset Railway web site.

After a visit to Minehead it was back on board for a short trip to Dunster and a lovely lunch and visit to the Castle with the day rounded off with the return trip to Bishops Lydeard.

The weather was beautiful and an excellent day out was had.

I can thoroughly recommend the WSR if you want to experience Steam travel and have an excellent day out!

As the ballasting continued to dry attention turned to wiring in some of the signals near the TMD.

The majority of signals on Stafford Central have been sourced via Roger Murray (Roger no longer has a web site but is still accepting direct commissions by email) and are a combination of either two or four aspect.

The signals are common positive so that I can connect them straight to the Lenz DCC system if required.

The signals wired today are going to change from red to green dependant on whether points 5 or 22 (see track plan) are open or closed - therefore attached to the base of each point motor I have glued (using a glue gun seems easiest) a micro switch.

I always seem to forget how to wire them in, so for your, and my benefit, I have drawn a diagram and added to the hints and tips section!

4 Apr 07

Work continued around the TMD.........

The yellow barriers were removed and weathered with only a couple returning. The concrete had it’s first run in with the “oil stains” and the TMD itself received a coat of grime.

Some small scenic touches were added - some old tyres, a bush or two and some clumps of long grass ( Woodlands Scenicsfield grass - an extremely fine, natural hair product that models tall grass, field grass and weeds).

Ballasting started around the TMD which included the main lines near it and the station approach - lots of point work so care had to be taken and it will need a few days to dry.

Some grafitti (Busch, "Graffiti" rub on transfers) was added here and there, and more work conducted on the walling behind the signal box.

31 Mar 2007

Work started again on the TMD......

New cork was laid as was new track.

I have decided to take advantage of the opportunity and removed a manual crossover which was seldom used leading to the TMD.

The new plan called for plastikard to be used for "concrete" - I could only get white so it has had to be painted. To get the right level more cork was added either side of the track, and after much cutting painting and muttering the new "concrete" was laid. Steps and a walk way were added to the inside of the TMD.

The TMD was put back into place and some grass added - much more work is needed however modeling time has run out today - couldn't resist placing some appropriate rolling stock and taking a few pictures.

29 Mar 2007

The use of clay was a mistake - by midweek, and as it hardened further, bigger and bigger cracks developed resulting in it all having to be torn up.

The track has been removed for cleaning and plan B is in preparation...

24 Mar 2007

A quick trip to the shops to pick up some more wood and clay.

The clay was used to finish off the base of the TMD. The clay which was worked yesterday had dried nicely and developed some small cracks which look like the real thing – just need to poor some tar (black paint) into them and we are done!

The TMD found it’s final resting place and yellow safety barriers were added too. The walling (Faller 170860) behind the TMD was trimmed and stuck – more needed to finish off the complete wall so an order placed. Oil tanks were placed as was a Skaledale skip. Once everything is completely dry oil and diesel stains need to be applied to the concrete and some grass added around the TMD.
In preparation for ballasting some grey paint was added to the baseboards.

Towards the station more walling was trimmed and stuck (Faller 170805) - this will form the backdrop to Stafford Central’s signal box and one of the tunnels going “off scene” – a little more walling needed to finish off the job (added to the order).

Lights were added to the signal box and the signal box placed. Holes were drilled for some 2 aspect signals – I had 3 in stock so in they went (will be wired another day) - need to get another 8 of these to finish off the scene around the station and TMD so tried to place an order with Roger Murray (www.rogermurray.com), however his web site seems to have folded. If anyone knows the new address please let me know.

All in all a productive day – no playing trains this weekend but things have definitely moved on some......

24 Mar 2007

Managed to pickup some more Kadee couplers earlier this week which will be fitted in due course, as will a couple of magnetic un-couplers for the Kadee’s which will be fitted into the goods yard area to allow automatic uncoupling…..more at a later date.

So on to today's activities.....

Following inspiration from Camelot Junction I have decided to add another level and do some reworking around the fiddle yard. I haven't thought everything out however will just let it develop.

Some wood was purchased, cut and screwed into place, this wood will be clad with Faller walling at some stage and will be the backdrop to the station and Stafford Central's Traction Maintenance Depot (TMD).

Once the wood was in place work stated on the "concrete" flooring of the TMD.

The concrete area is being made with air drying clay – an experiment that I hope works! Working with the clay was easy if messy! I didn’t have enough to complete the job so will have to wait until tomorrow when the shops are open again.

Another job for tomorrow will be  ballasting - this to finish off the station area up to the TMD.

And finally a little bit of tinkering done near the station however much more detailing needed.

18 Mar 2007

The next bit to work on is that of the station and surrounding area.

Some additional small boards were put in behind the platforms and the Skaledale Station buildings and accessories were placed until they looked at home. In addition some 6mm MDF was cut and painted to cover the white polysterene still showing at the side of the hill.

Lots more work to do including fixing and detailing but with limited time due to mothering Sunday onto the lights.

The lights for all the buildings on the layout are constructed in the same way - by using 5mm 12V Yellow LED's, terminal blocks and some
electrical wire.

The LED's incorporate an in-built series resistor enabling the LED to be directly connected to a 12V power supply - no soldering or messing about - and at 10p each a cheap way of lighting buildings. The ones I have used came from Rapid Electronics.
I tend to use 4 LED's per building to give just enough light.

The LED's are wired into a terminal block, mounted where you want them and connected into the power supply. I tend to stick them down with double sided tape.

To be able to better direct the light they are surrounded by a cut down toilet roll holder which fits quite nicely inside the Skaledale buildings and allows you to "direct" light by cutting slits into it if required.

And the finished result..... well nearly - I just need to direct the light a little better and add some finishing touches......

17 Mar 2007

Following the continued problems with 57010 - Bachmann Class 57/0 diesel 57010 "Freightliner Crusader" it was returned to AP Models who dutifully replaced it without question.

With everything crossed it was tested at home and received a clean bill of health - finally one that works! (AP Models will surely give a sigh of relieve)

Without further ado 57010 entered service.

The next job of the day was to sort out the dead section of track - a dropper wire was soldered into place and wired to the power and all tested ok.

Attention moved to the corner near the station that still required some scenic work carried out to finish the hilly section. The idea of a station access was shelved as being too much effort at this time (perhaps this area will be revisited).

So another hill with the necasary fir trees took was constructed.

Just a quick reminder of what it looked like back in February  → → → → → → → → → → → →

And a final scenic shot..........

15 Mar 2007

Managed to spend some time last night just running trains and it was great. A couple of problems came to light - a sticking point and a dead section of track (though it wasn’t dead at the start of the evening) – will have to take a closer look at the weekend.

57010 - Bachmann Class 57/0 diesel 57010 "Freightliner Crusader" was tested and still has running problems - back to the shop it goes.

12 Mar 2007

Well yesterday's visit went well and much advice was received ;-)

As usual some problems were highlighted - a misbehaving point or two. I really do need to find a more reliable solution - Tortoise™ Switch Machines maybe? - I will have to do more research - any advice would be gratefully received.

One problem that I did manage to resolve was a troublesome class 66 - 66200(G+) - Bachmann Class 66 diesel 66200 "Railway Heritage Commitee" EWS – this is fitted with a Gold Decoder with the power module attached and runs really well as you would expect. But and as you will notice there tends to be a but somewhere along the line – this particular engine would, when you switch on power to the layout continually flash all its lights and not accept any dcc commands until you lifted it off the track and re-seated it back on again.

Over some weeks I spent time trying to find a solution on the web but to no avail – it is hard to search for something when you do not actually know what the problem is – however I know now and only discovered by chance – there was a short circuit where the gold chip was making contact with one of the lighting circuits inside the engine – the chip has been insulated and hey presto problem gone!

10 Mar 2007

A running trains day to make sure everything runs smoothly, in preparation for a visit tomorrow by my grandfather – he always likes to see how things are progressing and usually offers some expert advice.

I did buy another couple of boxes of trees in preparation for some more scenic work and also picked up 57010 - Bachmann Class 57/0 diesel 57010 "Freightliner Crusader" and 66612(S) - Bachmann Class 66 diesel 66612 "Forth Raider" which had both been back to Bachmann for repairs via A.P Models.

66612 which I had described previously as running “like a dog” now runs extremely smoothly, 57010 will be tested another day.

In addition a few more pictures taken, and added to the images page with of course some more track cleaning.

Camelot Junction has given me a few ideas for disguising the fiddle yard but again that’s for another day……..

4 Mar 2007

A day of consolidation rather than dramatic change.......

The missing street lamp was added near the canal and some rewiring work done to neaten things up a little. More track cleaning. Another six street lights were wired in near Stobarts Distribution Centre. Oh and some much needed tidying was done!

A crossover was rewired with a Masterswitch added, this was the final one that required installation which will allow me to decommission one of the Lenz LS150’s. The LS150 has six connections allowing it to control 6 point motors – these are numbered sequentially. If you have crossovers (two sets of points connected together) then to get them to switch together you have to have two LS150’s numbered identically, therefore to operate six crossovers you need two LS150’s…..with me so far…..

The above is how I had wired the layout and then I came across the Masterswitch which can switch 2 point motors simultaneously (it sits between the crossover and the LS150) in effect allowing you to control six crossovers with one LS150. The masterswitch also add’s some oomph to move stubborn solenoid motors – it also allows you to do other things which I have yet to explore.

The masterswitches were bought some time ago from Bromsgrove Models. I was very impressed at the time, I ordered them Monday afternoon and they arrived on the Tuesday morning!

And finally, some night time shots added to the images page.

3 Mar 2007

66405(G+) - Bachmann Class 66 Diesel 66405 Blue Malcolm Logistics Services was fitted with a Kadee coupling and the CMX Clean Machine entered service and I am pleased with the result - "does exactly what it says on the tin"

I did try it with a few other engines but either the kadee wasn’t the right height or the loco wasn’t heavy enough or wasn’t powerful enough – so 66405 it is.

The 4 main lines have now been cleaned but much more work is needed.

Other work conducted today…..66709(G+) - Bachmann Class 66 diesel 66709 in GBRF\Medite livery was fitted with a 21 pin to 8 pin DCC adapter and a Lenz gold decoder with Power 1USP storage module attached. Onto the programming track it went to have the default chip running number changed to 709 and into service it entered – soon to be seen on the main line pulling an Intermodal load.

Some more pictures were also added to the images sections.

2 Mar 2007

Finally received a response from Bachmann today (only taken 6 days):

Thank you for your enquiry. We’ve shipped hundreds of adaptors to retailers all over the country since before Christmas – your local retailers would include Shrewsbury Model Centre and AP Models of Newport, however we have no way of knowing what they have in stock
Regards

Richard Matthews
Service Manager
Bachmann Europe plc

Whilst I give them credit for actually responding to the email, though slowly, they get no credit for assistance offered – AP Models hadn’t even heard of the adaptors let alone stocked them. Rails of Sheffield lists then as a Forthcoming release, Hattons lists them as pre-order, MG Sharp didn't stock them, Shrewsbury Model Centre didn't, and nor did Marcway Models  - all Bachmann stockists I believe – I am glad I managed to track a couple of the adapters down and didn’t rely on the Supplier to advise me!

The models that require 21 pin decoders are widely available, however decoders aren't and nor are the adapters - whilst I applauded Bachmann for moving DCC forward I do believe this exercise has been a bit of an own goal!

27 Feb 2007

Visited MG Sharp Models  and picked up the required Kadee Couplers (NEM362), I took along the
Clean Machine and they were kind enough to use a stock Bachmann 66 and test that everything would align correctly and it did - so I should now be all set - just need some railway time. Whilst there I also picked up another few packets of Kadee couplers to have a play with at a later date, some scenic bits and bobs from the Woodlands Scenics range including some tall grass, in a few different shades and some high tack adhesive (Hob-e-tac) to stick it with. The final purchase was from Busch, "Graffiti" rub on transfers - which will add a little realism somewhere.

A recent Ebay purchase also arrived today; 3 x 104 Tonne GLW HTA Hopper Wagon 'EWS' Weathered, these will go quite nicely with the other 4 I have and form an adequate rake behind a suitable EWS Class 66.

26 Feb 2007

Managed to find a stockist with the Bachmann 21 pin to 8 pin DCC adapters, Waltons of Altrincham (decent sized shop - a little expensive compared to where I normally shop though). The adapters were labelled "Liliput Ersatzteil L38004 spare part" and cost £3.75 each - bought the last two so I am back in business.

25 Feb 2007

An early start, and a good 8 hours to use on progressing the model railway…….

Some odd jobs finished, tidying up, face boards near the M6 & near one of Lenz LA152 faceplates added and painted. More painting in preparation for ballasting around the station and past the farm.

Today’s scenic work centred on the section near the station that allows local commuter trains to be run off of the main line and also has one of the return loops, this is the area ballasted last week. A chunk of this area is going to be out of view and therefore doesn’t need ballasting or any scenery added.

To start some 6mm MDF was cut and stuck\ screwed into place with a large enough hole cut for the trains to run!

The obligatory polystyrene came next – this was going to be a steep smooth hill reminiscent of the Lake District however my wife had other ideas!

Once happy with the rough hill outline, inside the “tunnel” was painted with grey and everything stuck with PVA. The MDF was painted with some odd paint left over in the garage in an attempt to create a kind of sky – more work definitely required on scenic backdrops!

One of Hornby’s Skaledale - Double Brick Tunnel Portals was also stuck into place, then the grass was cut, shaped and stuck into place and another pine forest planted.

I am thinking of having the station access road run down the side with polysterene still showing however that's for another day.......

On the web site front a Guestbook page was added for anyone that wants to leave comments.

The track ballasted last weekend is well and truly dry, cleaning began with the removal of any ballast that might foul running stock using a small screw driver, followed by a track rubber and then the vacuum cleaner to remove all the bits. Track was tested with an old wagon and then a test run by a train -success another section ballasted.

Attention moved onto some more scenic work and hey presto another hill was formed and more pine trees planted.

No joy on the NEM Plug In Kadee Couplers locally so track cleaning has been put on hold. No responses from emails sent to a couple of retailers either, which is disappointing but not a surprise as from previous experience some retailers never respond – as a result unless I am really desperate they don’t get my business!

I am in the Sheffield area next week and will pop in to MG Sharp Models as these seem to have a large supply of Kadee Couplers and a good deal of information on their web site.

The Model Rail limited edition Bachmann ‘OO’ Class 66 in GB Railfreight/Medite black livery arrived today (GBRf 66709 Joseph Arnold Davies). The model comes complete with Shawplan etched nameplates, features all-wheel drive, working directional LED lights and a 21-pin DCC decoder socket - this introduces another problem for me as having called around a few Bachmann stockists they do not have the adapter nor know when it is to be released.

A press release from Bachmann on 2 Dec 06 stated:

For purchasers of the non sound Class 66 locomotive (and the future Bachmann locomotives that use the 21 pin sockets) who wish to use 8 pin decoders it will be necessary to purchase an adapter (36-559 or L38004) to fit the 21 pin socket. This retails at 3.40 and can be obtained from your Bachmann dealer.

Well no it can't - email has been sent to Bachmann requesting advise.

Two parcels recieved today, the order from Digitrains which pleasantly suprised me as the price of the CMX Clean Machine was actually £10 cheaper than the advertised price I had seen on their web site - this was due to two different pages having different prices (one with the old stock and one with the new - I got the last old one - lucky me) - Will be getting some nail varnish remover in the next couple of days so that I can try out the clean machine over the weekend.

The second parcel contained 12 x Micro Scalextrix (L7559) Yellow Crash Barriers bought from EBay for £4.49 incl postage. With a little bit of effort I think these will work great around the Diesel Maintenance Shed - they could also be used as roadside crash barriers if painted.

I thought I would take a quick look at the clean machine and make sure everything was in order ready for the weekend however as usual there is a problem.......

The clean machine comes with kadee couplers - something I have no experience with - I have decided to use the clean machine with one of my Bachmann 66's (fitted with a Lenz Gold Decoder with a Power 1 module fitted - this should help with the dirty track) - so how to connect the 66 to the clean machine?

I had a look at changing the kadee couplings on the clean machine but that doesn't seem a good option - so it looks like the coupling on the 66 needs to change to a kadee........internet research here I come........

Following some research it would appear that you can get some NEM Plug In Kadee Couplers - I think some phone calls\ emails are needed..........

Only managed to spare a few hours this weekend and before I can continue with some of the more scenic areas...........Ballasting.......another job I dislike……..

Preparation is the key to everything they say and as usual due to my lack of patience in the beginning I end up with a harder job now or a finish that could have been better - oh well thinks will be better on the next layout.

So what would I have done differently…..well for a starter after laying the cork track bed, but before pinning the track I would have painted it – it would have made for a much neater job and avoided some of the cork showing through after ballasting. I might also have looked for a better ballasting solution - as the traditional method is both long and laborious.

Enough wishing I had done something different, onto the job at hand......

The track is laid on a cork bed, the cork is 1/8” thick and can be bought in sheets 36” x 24” and costs about £5 a sheet. Once the track is laid, pinned into position and tested to ensure everything runs well the cork is trimmed (too much cork and I have found it swells and bubbles once you soak the ballast). Fill in any missing sleepers and paint – I use Dulux Paint (Ebony Mists 2), I buy 250ml tester pots (£1.49 - £1.99) which proves much cheaper than the small pots of model paint.

This colour has also been used for the roads and motorways in and around Stafford Central. Then wait an hour or so to dry…….

The ballasting method used is the traditional one. The ballast is Javis Fine Granite Chippings and was bought in 7lb bags (JFG7). I purchased 35lb for starters and have two bags left! Spread the ballast and shape as required at track edges, use sparingly near points and use less at first (you can always add a little more). I use my finger to spread and work in between the sleepers.

Once happy I soak with a PVA (50%), Water (49%), and Fairy Washing up Liquid (1%) mix (I make up batches using old jars - if you don't you will always find that you need a little more to finish the job in hand).

The easiest way I have found to control application is a turkey baster - purchased from a local cook shop for a couple of pounds. I soak the middle of the track first and then either side - filling in any bits that don't look really wet.

When I say really soak - I mean really soak and then leave to dry – can take a few days (I sometimes find it is best to do on a Sunday night ready for the following Saturday).

Don’t panic if it looks white to start with – it will dry better – honest!

And finally make sure you switch the points manually a couple of times throughout the drying process to avoid them sticking!

Placed an order for the CMX Clean Machine and also a couple of Lenz Gold Decoders and the Power 1 USP modules to go with them. Digitrains wasn’t the cheapest for the CMX Clean Machine however I have used them before and have been pleased with their service and also the pricing of their Lenz Equipment.

The Lenz GOLD decoders are equipped with soldering pads to which the cables of the POWER 1 storage module must be soldered however these are very small and my soldering is not very good so Digitrains provide them pre-soldered (only place in UK I have been able to find so far).

POWER 1 is an energy storage module for use with GOLD Series decoders. USP means "uninterruptible signal processing.” This storage unit supplies the decoder and the locomotive with power when there is an interruption of electrical connection to the track (e.g. dirty tracks).

Ideal on my track at present!

Rose early today and managed to snap a picture of some deer grazing!

Once I had got over my luck I encountered the first problem of the day - I always seem to find something that ran fine last time doesn't this! Running repairs were required on 57307(S) - Bachmann Class 57/3 diesel 57307 "Lady Penelope" in Virgin Trains livery - a dropped drive shaft seemed to be the problem and that was the start of today!

Work began on the stretch between Canal corner and the Station. See below for some pictures of before, during and after. For all hills and embankments so far I have used expanded polystyrene which I bought from Wickes. It comes in large sheets (2400 x 600 x 50mm) and only costs £6.49 a sheet – easy to cut and shape but makes a complete mess when doing so – I have my own vacuum cleaner in the loft thus ensuring I don’t get shouted at for using the wife’s!

Once cut into shape it is stuck down using some PVA and then the “grass” is applied – as stated previously on this site I like to make things easy for myself and rather than use scatters I have opted to use hanging basket liner, bought by the metre from Wyvale Garden Centre and cut into shape – it is made from various coloured fibres and though sheds it’s fibres gives a good overall effect and is very quick to use. The “grass” is stuck down with a little PVA and voila another field.

Trees and Hedges used are from the K&M range, and though it works out quite expensive for a forest the overall effect is good (though shapes and tree types are limited) and far from as expensive as some you can purchase.

Just need to add some fencing to the foreground and sort out the background and another job done.

And finally some new pictures, including this rather atmospheric shot, added to the Images page.....

Another quiet week on the modelling front - this is going to have to stop!

Spent sometime yesterday evening looking for a solution to dirty track, which is a problem with either DC or DCC - I do have some of the 66's fitted with Lenz Gold Decoders with power 1 usp modules and these work well on dirty track but there comes a time when these even struggle!

I have tried track rubbers and though effective they are time consuming and leave “marbles” at the side of the track. I have also used to reasonable effect alcohol based solvent cleaners. Both methods above are currently used at Stafford Central but a better solution is needed.

Simon over at Camelot Junction uses Rail ZIP to break down the grime and then a Roco Rail cleaner car to remove – this works well for him and was the starting point for my research.

After much reading I have settled on the CMX Clean Machine – an order will be placed in the next few days and upon arrival I will let you know how it performs.

Details of the CMX Clean Machine and some indepth analysis can be downloaded here.

The following new additions arrived this week (all via A.P Models) and will enter service at some stage:

  • Hornby Skaledale Fuel Oil Tanks
  • Bachmann Intermodal Bogie Wagon C/W 45ft. Containers Asda (x4)
  •
Bachmann Intermodal Bogie Wagon C/W 45ft. Container Dhl (x4)
  • Bachmann Intermodal Bogie Wagon C/W 45ft. Container Malcom Logistics (x4)

I have spent some time trawling for realistic lineside fencing in the past, with it having to look good and with the amount needed, cost little. Making it myself is out of the question - time and effort I would rather spend elsewhere - EBay to the rescue once again.

The end result can be seen from the picture at the top of this page - quite effective I think. Another 10 metres arrived this week, it requires painting but for £2 per metre I can't complain.

The fencing is produced by Sean Kay.

This has been a quiet week on the modelling front, with domestic duties taking first charge on my time!

One area I have invested some time in is that of getting my site visible and I have spent several hours trying to get links to a couple of web rings (DCC UK & UK Modern image layouts) established on Stafford Central's main page - I finally suceeded this morning through more trial and error, I had emailed web ring support on a couple of occasions this week to no avail - a frustrating time but now behind me :-)

I have received a new stock of hand made street lights (see links for more details) which will enable me to add more lighting to the Stobart and other industrial area.

In addition I am selling a couple more items on EBay to hopefully help fund my A.P Models order for this year, which was placed this week and includes:

    • Bachmann 32-380DS - Class 37/5 Railfreight Coal Sector - DCC sound.
    • Bachmann 32-726DS - Class 66 Freightliner Shanks - DCC sound.
    • Bachmann 32-977 - Class 66/9 DRS/Stobart Rail
    • Bachmann 37-303 - Intermodal Bogie Wagon ASDA
    • Bachmann 37-304 - Intermodal Bogie Wagon Malcolm Logistics
    • Bachmann 37-305 - Intermodal Bogie Wagon DHL
    • Hornby R6336 - 100 ton tank wagon EWS
    • Numerous Skaledale properties!

An order was also placed for the Model Rail  Bachmann limited edition ( 500 pieces ) Class 66 in GB Railfreight/Medite black livery ( 66709 - Joseph Arnold Davies ) which will make an interesting addition to the fleet. There was some furore at Model Rail this week when having only just been released a couple were listed on EBay with one selling for nearly double the purchase price!

    27 Jan 2007

Hornby and Bachmann catalogues purchased to enable me to identify purchases for this year - initial look is favourable and some more DCC Sound diesels will I am sure find there way onto the order list. In addition some Noch deer were purchased to add some interest to the forest sections - these will be added at a later date.

I had ordered some Kibri wind turbine kits via a German trader on EBay which arrived earlier this week - My wife was kind enough to make them up - these have now been placed suitably into the landscape.

    Another three Engines entered service:
    • Bachmann Class 37/5 Diesel 37678 Red Stripe/ Railfreight
    • Bachmann Class 57/0 diesel 57008 "Freightliner Explorer" in Freightliner livery
    • Bachmann Class 57/3 diesel 57307 "Lady Penelope" in Virgin Trains livery

All have been fitted with Lenz Silver decoders.

Picked up a replacement 57010 - Bachmann Class 57/0 diesel 57010 "Freightliner Crusader" in Freightliner livery (DCC decoder on board) - the previous one had been given to me for Christmas however when finally I got around last weekend to test running it, it had a fault where the gears didn't appear to engage. As usual AP Models were excellent and provided a replacement - unfortunately when tested this had the same problem and had to be returned - fortunately they had one more left in stock - we tested it in the shop and this had the same fault! Must be a dodgy batch - the problem is to be discussed with the Bachmann Rep later in the week along with another fault on 66612 - Bachmann Class 66 diesel 66612 "Forth Raider" in Freightliner livery (runs like a dog - something must be rubbing). Again this demonstrates excellent customer service from AP Models - they have taken both problems out of my hands and they will sort - can't ask for more.

More trees purchased. Lima 67002 sold on EBay - I have decided to thin down the collection a little as perhaps I have bought too much for my needs, or is it so I can fund some more purchases!
